José Javier will be District 27’s voice in Congress just as he has been our voice in the Florida Legislature.
Here is what he’ll continue fighting for:
Fight for Access to Healthcare.
Making sure that all Americans have access to affordable and quality healthcare is José Javier’s priority. That means lowering costs and expanding quality healthcare options for all Americans; strengthening the Affordable Care Act and programs like Medicare and Medicaid; and taking a proactive stance on addressing minority and other health disparities. José Javier, raised by a mother who was a nurse, has fought hard in the Florida Legislature on implementing the Affordable Care Act and on expanding access to quality healthcare. He will continue that fight every day for us in Congress as we move toward Medicare-for-all.
Advocate Economic Opportunity for All.
José Javier has consistently achieved recognition as a “Middle Class Champion” by Progress Florida for his record in the Florida Legislature fighting to protect and expand the middle class. In 2017 he was one of only six legislators designated by Florida Strong’s Economic Opportunity Index as a champion of working families. José Javier’s father, a Cuban exile, came to the United State alone as a teenager; through educational opportunities and hard work he achieved the American dream. José Javier, with the help of student financial aid, was able to study at the best universities in the country, come home and give back to the community. He wants to protect those pathways to success. That’s why expanding pathways to the middle class by ensuring a quality education for all, without a life-time of crippling student load debt, and promoting good paying jobs will continue to be José Javier’s focus in Congress. He’ll fight to make sure we have an economy that works for all Americans, gives everyone a chance at living a middle class life and that no family working full-time all year round lives in poverty.
Promote Economic Prosperity.
José Javier believes that a future-oriented economy needs Congress to lead. As he has in the Florida Legislature, José Javier will work hard in Congress for policies that harness technology, encourage innovation, invest in workforce education and promote renewable energy — because “green jobs” are good jobs with pathways to the middle class and economic benefits into the future.
Confront Climate Change.
José Javier has been among the strongest advocates of clean energy in the Florida Legislature, drafting and advancing policies to promote solar energy. As a father, José Javier believes we owe it to future generations to invest in science and make the tough policy choices we need to in order to move as quickly as possible to a low-fossil-fuel economy, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. That’s what he’ll fight for in Congress.
Tackle Sea Level Rise.
José Javier has been a leader in advocating for policy changes to address sea level rise and has been effective in bringing infrastructure funding home from the Florida Legislature to help our area confront the reality of sea level rise. Areas of District 27, our home, are among the most vulnerable to sea level rise in the world. Continuing his work for our area in addressing sea level rise will be José Javier’s priority in Congress.
Protect Clean Water.
In the Florida Legislature and here at home, José Javier has been successful in fighting some of the most powerful interests in the state in championing clean water. José Javier fought for Everglades restoration as a means of protecting South Florida’s aquifer and battled water contamination emanating from the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. In Congress he will be an equally strong and effective advocate for us.
Champion Democracy and Human Rights.
José Javier believes that protecting democracy and promoting fundamental human rights should be central to our foreign policy. That’s why, even in the Florida Legislature, José Javier has lead the way in putting pressure on Wall Street firms collaborating with Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro’s regime. With respect to U.S. policy toward Cuba, José Javier believes that the Obama Administration’s policy of person to person engagement, if done correctly, has the greatest long-term chance of fostering freedom, democratic transition and human rights for the Cuban people and supports continuing it. In Congress José Javier will support our allies toward a stable and democratic Middle East that recognizes basic human rights and protects the peace and security of Israel.
Advance Women’s Health.
Jose Javier understands that for too long women’s health care has been under attack from partisan interests who want to put government between a woman and her doctor. Jose Javier has been a champion in the Florida Legislature when it comes to women’s health and protecting a women’s right to make her own health care decisions. This includes protecting the gains made under the Affordable Care Act that ensure that women are not discriminated against in obtaining health care.
Work to End Discrimination.
In Congress José Javier will work hard toward a more inclusive society just as he has in the Florida Legislature. José Javier has a track record of advocating and standing up for protections for the LGBT community; for equal treatment of immigrants, especially immigrant students in our public schools, colleges and universities; and for greater anti-discrimination protections for women in the workplace. Among his legislative successes, José Javier passed legislation to better protect victims of domestic violence.
In the Florida Legislature José Javier has been an effective advocate of protections for the vulnerable, and that includes consumers. José Javier has passed legislation to protect seniors from economic exploitation as well as legislation protecting consumers from theft of personal information. He has also been the leading advocate for reforms protecting students at for-profit colleges.
Honor Our Veterans.
Florida prides itself on being a veteran-friendly state and José Javier is proud to have supported a pro-veteran agenda in the Florida Legislature. He will do the same in Congress. José Javier will work to ensure returning service members and their families have access to the best educational opportunities, jobs, and healthcare. Veterans have served, and their families have sacrificed, to keep our country safe and prosperous; they deserve nothing less.
Defend Social Security.
In Congress José Javier will fight to protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts, from efforts at privatization and from attempts to raise the retirement age. Our seniors and those who are about to retire have paid into the system and deserve to rely on the benefits they earned.
Hold the White House Accountable.
No one is above the law, least of all the President who occupies the highest office in the land. José Javier will hold Donald Trump accountable. José Javier has been an advocate of ethics reform while in the Florida Legislature and, toward Washington, has been a vocal critic of the abuse of power emanating from the White House and the Trump Administration. In Congress he will be a forceful advocate, holding the White House accountable and ensuring a full and fair independent investigation of the Trump Administration.
Hold Congress Accountable.
Government of the people, by the people, for the people – Americans have given their lives defending it. We cannot allow Congress to thwart it by advancing special interest agendas behind closed doors. José Javier will be a forceful advocate in Congress for ending backroom deals, maintaining open debate and engaging in town halls like he has in representing constituents in our area in the Florida Legislature.
Championing Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
In the Florida Legislature, José Javier is proud to have helped lead the charge to successfully end tuition discrimination against DREAMers; to have consistently defended against efforts to turn local governments into immigration enforcers; and to fight as the leading advocate for allowing Floridians access to driver licenses regardless of immigration status. If elected to Congress, José Javier will continue this work, championing comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship and continue standing for responsible policies to keep our communities safe and families unified.
